About Techcrunch

TechCrunch is one of the best undiscovered Websites discussed by PC Magazine. The site keeps up with beta tests of software, new Internet sites, and the entire Web 2.0 scene. Every new entry is dated, and there is a “comments” area where you can read what other people think about the entry and add your own comments.

This is a critical part of the entry, because it helps every reader make up their mind about the value of the entry for their own use. If you believe, as I do, that as a business owner, you should keep abreast of what’s going on in technology and the World Wide Web, this site can keep you up to date.
Now let’s see what things we can do from the quick links buttons at the top of the Web page body.

First is the “Forum.” There are 10 categories with thousands of views and a few thousand replies. Most popular are “Company Reviews, TechCrunch Lounge, and Business Development.” Any of these forums provides an opportunity to see what others think about a new TechCrunch entry, or you may get advice on some new business idea or technical problem.

The “About” area has interesting information about the company. TechCrunch has been featured by CBS News, CNet Top 100 Blogs, The Wall Street Journal, Business 2.0 magazine, and others.

To have your company considered for inclusion in the blog, use the “Contact” button. Be prepared to answer questions about you, your company, your product, and your management team. Provide the best data you have, because a lot of people will see this site. At this writing Alexa ranked this site extremely high at 484. If you can get listed here, a lot of people are likely to see you.
All companies discussed are listed on the “Company Index” page. There are many.

TechCrunch attracts over one million unique visitors each month, and if you want to advertise to all these people, click “Advertise” and you will e able to do that for about $10,000 per month.

If you are interested you may view all “Archives” back to the beginning in 2005.
There is a “Cool Jobs” tab, which takes one to CrunchBoard listing new jobs available for cybergeeks. CrunchBoard has an RSS feed that will deliver job openings continuously to your desktop as they are posted. Some jobs available as this is written are:
  • Product Manager, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
  • Software Development Manager, Sharpe Partners, New York
  • Lead Developer, Chrome River Technologies, Los Angeles
  • Software Development Engineer, JibJab Media, Inc., Santa Monica, CA
  • Senior Systems Engineer, Truveo, San Francisco
  • Web Developer, Warner Bros. Records, Burbank, CA
  • Web UI Developer, Power Steering Software, Cambridge, MA
  • Web Designer, NYTimes.com, New York
  • Information Architect, NYTimes.com, New York
  • Database Expert, VC-funded Start-up, Saratoga, CA
  • Software Integration Architect, NBC Universal, Englewood Cliffs, NJ
Finally, don’t forget to subscribe to the “RSS” feed; everybody needs the helpful information posted on this site. Here are some of the new ideas on this Website at the time of writing. Some may have been removed by the time you read this but the site remains very interesting because of the large number of new ideas expressed on it.

Trusted Opinion is social networking Website devoted to movies, restaurants, and nightclubs. Join new friends with common interests.

TextMarks has a new service that you can use to bring money to your blog. For $4.99 or $9.99 per month (which you must share with a carrier) you can send various alerts via Web or text message.

SimpleStar has an upgrade of PhotoShow 5 which allows sharing your photos with your group and also allows construction of very nice musical PhotoShows.

Photobucket has teamed with Adobe to enable users to create an improved mashup of photos, videos, and sound. This improvement is available to premium users.

Google has announced it will provide the number of subscribers any RSS feed has on free Google Reader and Google Homepage.

Fantasy Moguls is a fantasy league for movies. Players draft movies and earn points based on box office performance, number of weeks in top five, and other performance data similar to the fantasy sport Websites. This one is partly funded by Amazon.com.

Zudeo is a new supposedly “all legal” P2P for online video distribution. The site makes available commercially produced movies as well as amateur productions.

Tree-nation is a site devoted to reforest a portion of Niger with eight million trees. Buy a tree at this site and it will be planted in a heart-shaped desert area of Niger. Available trees are Acacia Senegal, Ronier (palm), Acacia Sieberiana, and Baobab. What a cool environmental idea.

Suppose you get some bothersome health symptom in the middle of the night.

How can you quickly find out how serious it is? Easy. Go to Healthline Symptom Search and enter your problem.

Now suppose you find yourself in a delicate social situation and need to know the result of a recent STD test. Simply go to Check Tonight. After furnishing the proper releases you can find what you need.

FreeYourID.com allows you to register a personal .Name domain name which in turn can be used as an OpenID identifier, Website URL, and email host. Your domain name will be in the format of first.last.name and the domain can then be directed to a Website, host email aliases or more interestingly, be used as login credentials for services that support OpenID. The service is free for 90 days then costs $2.99 per quarter or $10.95 per year.

There are many Websites listed here that I never imagined. I’m not interested in all of them, but there are one or two I will at least try. The thing that impressed me most was the constant addition of new items, two or three while I wrote this article. I will certainly add the RSS feed to my reader.
