From Unemployed To Startup

It may seem strange to talk about business startups when most readers already have a going home based business. Of course there are also some readers who are still thinking of becoming self-employed. This article will help both groups.

Sometimes, a business you have been promoting for a long time begins to decline in profits. When this decline starts to eat into your assets, it’s time to ditch your old business and find something new and profitable to do. Perhaps you will get an idea about a new endeavor from what these entrepreneurs are doing.
If you, or an acquaintance, are thinking of starting you own home-based business, you may gain some perspective on what it takes to start a business, You will need to assess your ability to assume risk, as well as what it really is that you want to do. Perhaps it will help some to just decide to try; after all, simply getting started is one of the major hurdles to face a home based entrepreneur.
It will give some ideas to any who may be unemployed, but are considering the possibility entrepreneurship as a way to bring in some income. A lot of prospective entrepreneurs get turned off quickly by the need for startup money. They need to know that some Internet businesses can be started with almost no money, and a study by Wells Fargo bank found the average startup cost is around $10,000. Prospective startup people should be encouraged to find out all the facts before becoming discouraged. Maybe this article will help.
The millennials, born in the ‘80s and ‘90s, have had a very difficult time finding jobs; those they have found are undesirable. This has led many to become entrepreneurs. We will examine a few of their stories
HAYDEN 5 MEDIA
This company, located in New York City, was formed in 2009 by two graduates of the NYUTech Film School. The owners decided they would rather work for themselves than someone else, so the pooled $3,000 and formed Hayden 5. They began by searching Craigslist for customers; now they have quadrupled gross revenues every year since they began.
The company specializes in videos for four different categories of clients: digital, film, music video, and television. Among their customers are Aruba, Bloomberg Television, The Economist, and many others.
MYTRIORINGS.COM
This company, My Trio Rings, was formed by a 2009 graduate of Northwestern University. The founder came from a family long involved in the diamond industry. When a friend asked for advice about buying a ring for his girlfriend, this college graduate jumped on the opportunity and formed My Trio Rings. The idea made up for a lack of job openings for college graduates.
The company creates ring sets for $400 to $1,500 that, purchased separately, would cost $5,000. He keeps prices low with his online only retail store. So far his business has shown a 300% yearly growth rate.
The company’s mission statement is:
We at My Trio Rings have one mission: To help make your search for the perfect wedding ring set as memorable, stress-free, and simple as possible. If you're about to get married, finding a wedding ring should be the least of your worries, which is why My Trio Rings aims to make the search process as smooth, painless, and easy as possible. TICKETKICK.COM
This completely broke college student got three speeding tickets in three weeks and really needed help. He did some research, and got some legal advice which enabled him to get two of his three tickets dropped. Friends began to ask how he did it, and before long he realized he had enough customers to form a business. He realized 2010 was the perfect time to start a business that saved money for people.
Ticketkick was formed just before his graduation from college. The company charges $79 to $199 to handle document and defense preparation to contest traffic violations. They have a 70% success rate and expect to have $1,000,000 in sales their first year.
Ticketkick works because California law allows traffic tickets to be settled with Trial by Written Declaration. This means you can contest a traffic ticket, and often win, right from your home. This is a very good example of seizing a golden opportunity as soon as it appears.
THE NAMING GROUP
A lifelong lover of words, this 2007 graduate went to work with a brand naming company. However, she felt insecure and decided, in 2009, to quit and form her own naming company, The Naming Group. The entire creative staff of her former company came with her. She is now recognized as a nationally known expert on brand names.
This statement from the Website accurately describes exactly what the company does and how it does the job.:
Our clients don't hire us merely to create names. They hire us to develop big-picture naming strategy, create names and jointly make decisions that advance their brand.
We become an in-house out-of-house partner: as much expert counsel as we are creatives. We don't only create effective names, but help clients know great names when they see them: guiding the right practices - and creating a culture in their organization - needed to select names with strategic purpose.
It works! Our names consistently broadcast clear, brand-advancing messages. And our client teams enjoy the confidence and convenience of knowing how and why to choose the right brand name.
TOUCHAPPMEDIA.COM
There are over 400,000 apps on the market, but the founder of TouchAppMedia.com believes software developers have barely scratched the surface. He had no problem finding a good job, with his skills, but he wanted to make decisions about his own future rather than leave it to managers and others. The result was TouchAppMedia.com, started in 2010. The company specifically takes advantage of the exploding mobile market.
His marketing plan allows his partners to pay him so the end users get the apps free. How great is that? The result is revenues are up 100%.
VORSIGHT
The founder of this company has an attitude that is particularly applicable to the current no jobs situation. He says, “If you can't find the job you want, you should create it.” And so he did. He left a good job in 2005 to form Vorsight, a company providing B2B sales training and appointment setting services. Among his clients are Rosetta Stone and Blackboard.
The company now has over $4 million in revenue. He started it with not much more than his own personal efforts. Vorsight helps companies and sales people overcome the hardest part of the sales cycle—getting in the door for the first time. They do this by effective training and scheduling.
OTHER EXAMPLES
Here are three examples of hard economic times actually being a blessing:

Entrepreneur Magazine says there was a 60-year old man who always wanted his own business but could never do it because his wife was adamant about a “real job” with a regular paycheck. She died before his layoff so she never knew the truth about “real jobs.” Termination of his job gave this man the opportunity he had always wanted—after thorough research he took a chance, put up most of his financial assets, and bought into a franchise which worked just fine for him. It was too early for him to retire and when the paycheck stopped what other choice did he really have? You see, there is often OPPORTUNITY IN A LAYOFF.
And here is the story of a 43 year old woman who had worked for a number of businesses and they all ended up going out of business or terminating her employment for unknown reasons. She finally realized that all those years were spent receiving praise for her good work but without realizing one penny of reward for herself. Another example of the opportunity provided by a layoff, it gave her the chance to step back, look at her past life, and realize all her disappointments had finally given her the opportunity and the courage to go into her own franchise business.
Our last example is about the man who spent 25 years as a successful regional VP of a national fast food chain. His pink slip came after a successful quarter for his region and was entirely unexpected with no reason given. That would be quite a jolt for anyone. He did what every person in that situation should do—he talked to a knowledgeable acquaintance who was outside the immediate situation. This person advised him to get away from the corporate world (always good advice if you can do it). The laid off man decided to run a fitness center and now looks at his layoff, although for reasons unknown, as the means to get him out of his comfort zone and showed him he has better things to do by changing careers.
CONCLUSION
If you can’t find a job, or you have been laid off, keep faith in yourself; we all have a tremendous ability to survive and everyone can emerge against great odds to ultimately be successful. People who emerge from extreme adversity, like a layoff, have the ability to rebound, they have enough strength to withstand adverse conditions, and they have the wisdom to learn from mistakes. These people will persevere, focus on their new life, and quickly move on to better things.
Rather than concentrating only on working for another company, and risk a layoff again in the future, you should also consider the opportunity to become self-employed, especially in one of the home jobs available. See if having your own business will be good for you, meaning you must research all the risks and benefits, good and bad. Then decide what you want your life to be. If you want regular hours with no weekends you may decide you are not cut out to be an entrepreneur. Should you decide to start your own business, try to get into an industry you know something about or at least one that is of interest to you—it is imperative for you to be passionate about what you do. While doing your research you need to remain objective, which could be hard after a layoff. Talk to others outside your immediate family; use local resources like the community college and knowledgeable friends. They will help you avoid mistakes from being too close to your situation.
If you should have your job terminated, or you can’t find a job, don’t view it as a disaster. Step back, take a long view of your life from what it was to what you would like for it to be, seek reliable advice, and find out everything you can about the possible opportunities ahead for you. Even after you do this always begin to look for better jobs, even if you are working for yourself. You may see a niche you can operate alongside a “real job” or in addition to your own business. The point is you must never become complacent and think you are in the best place you can be. There is always something better.
