RPNs could include special information such as an upcoming sale, a Website, phone number, a reminder, a discount coupon, or some other marketing message. These notes are more likely to be read and saved after the mail piece is opened than a regular piece of mail. A study cited by the USPS indicates the use of RPNs increased the response rate by up to 37%. USPS suggests that to increase your response rate with RPNs, they can “be used as a removable device affixed to a reply card inside the envelope. Or as a coupon that can be redeemed.”
RPNs can be any color except they may not contain phosphorescent or red fluorescent colorants. They must be machine-applied (NOT hand applied!) to ensure that they don’t fall off, but other than that, they do not require special handling. The application can be done by any mail house, printer, or letter shop that has automated labeling equipment. The price of a Repositionable Note applied to First Class Mail is $0.005 and when applied to Periodicals or Standard Mail, the price is $0.015.
